A “Life” volunteer, Mr Michael Langman has been presented with the British Empire Medal for services to the community of Braunstone.
The ceremony took place at Beaumanor Hall with the Lord Lieutenant presiding.
Michael is a very well known figure around Braunstone and a Life deliverer. The committee sends their heartiest congratulations!
This year, 2012, the” Life” has been extremely fortunate to be presented with two awards.
To mark H M the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Lady Gretton, awarded the Diamond Jubilee Award to the “Life”. Two very proud volunteers went to the awards ceremony at Beaumanor Hall where they received the presentation plaque.
The “Life” was also nominated for Blaby District Council’s Outstanding Achievement Award for the Community or voluntary group that improves the quality of life for residents in Blaby district. The nomination read:
Braunstone Life
Now in its 25th year, Braunstone Life continues to serve its community providing valuable information and neighbourhood news. A not for profit publication, all the work apart from print is carried out on a voluntary basis with over 100 volunteers donating their time and effort. Many of the deliverers not only distribute Braunstone Life, but over time as they have grown to know the people they deliver to, fetch shopping and take people to hospital after accidents or to regular appointments.
Again, four volunteers went along to the awards ceremony and were extremely delighted when the winner, US, was announced.
One of the “Life” volunteers was also nominated, for his Selfless service to a voluntary body or the community.
Anthony Thorpe
After helping others for many years Anthony decided to volunteer at Community Action Partnership as a befriender. He currently visits three befriendees each week providing companionship and support. Anthony also spends vast amounts of time doing things such as renovating and donating mobility scooters and wheelchairs, taking library books to housebound people and collecting fish and chips for them. To quote one gentleman he gave a mobility scooter to, “This is the first time I have been out the house for three years, it’s wonderful.”
Tony also stands in for Santa when he’s too busy! Tony has told me that if I put his photo on the front cover, he’s going to have to bend the Life so that no-one can see him – so if you received a bent copy, you know why. Sorry Tony! We’re thrilled that Tony also won his award.
The “Life” also celebrated our 25th birthday! Quite a year…
We held a birthday celebration for over 200 guests, volunteers, local dignatories and representatives from local groups who regularly contribute articles to the Life. We presented Founder Member and Long Service certificates to our volunteers. We also presented our Trophies to our Sports Personality of the Year, the Junior Sports Personality and the Team of the Year. Everyone had a lovely evening.
